Study Bibles
(See related past article here.)
Luke 19 concludes with a group of people who have gathered in God’s “house of prayer” and are “hanging on Jesus’ words”. Clearly this is a mark of His faithful servants who embrace His reign over them (v.17), for it is through His Word that Christ rules His people.
In last week’s article, I discussed some of the criteria for choosing which English translations of the Bible to study. Today, I’d like to share which study Bibles I use regularly. All of these come in multiple cover types (i.e. hard and soft) and are sold from multiple online retailers.
Given that I preach and teach from the ESV, here are my top two recommendations for ESV Study Bibles:
1. ESV Gospel Transformation Study Bible
- Rather than being an exhaustive study Bible that comments on every phrase of every verse, this provides commentary on passages (groups of key verses), making it highly accessible for new readers.

2. ESV Student Study Bible
- This is a trimmed-down version of the “ESV Study Bible”, thus making it small enough to carry around.

I also use both of these NIV study Bibles every week:
3. NIV Grace & Truth Study Bible
4. NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible
Honorable mention:
5. CSB Study Bible
