Jonah 1:1-16
Bringing the sermon home:
The main message of the passage is clear: Disobedience deserves death, but mercy is offered to those who repent. Jonah found himself surrounded by sinners aboard a sinking ship who were facing certain death and were without hope unless a servant of God taught them to call upon the name of the Lord to be saved.
It’s an apt metaphor for the circumstances in which we find ourselves. Have you called out to those who are still aboard a sinking ship, calling them to repent and receive the good news of God’s mercy toward sinners?
May we faithfully proclaim the word that the Lord has given us to proclaim. May we “arise and go”, making disciples of all nations (Mt 28:19-20).
“Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. (Ephesians 5:14-17)
