Water Carriers for Jesus
As Jesus gives instructions to two of His disciples about preparing for the Passover, He instructs them to “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him, and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’” (Mark 14:13-14).
Put yourself in the shoes of these four men. Presuming that the water carrier was given his instructions in advance, along with the master of the house, then we see four very menial tasks, one being to simply carry a jar of water and lead two men to a house. And yet, each task was essential for the preparation of the Lord’s “Last Supper”.
Apart from the ability to pipe clean water into people’s homes, someone must do the hard work of physically transporting water from rivers and wells. In the business world, it has become common to use the metaphor of a “water carrier” to refer to employees who quietly and faithfully go about the mundane tasks that must be done, but which almost always go unnoticed.
Not every follower of Jesus is called to sell everything and become a foreign missionary, or to plant a new church, or to otherwise commit to full-time ministry, but each one of us is called to be a “water carrier” – to quietly and faithfully go about the everyday tasks to which He has called us: to seek Him in His Word and prayer, fight sin, share the gospel, gather regularly for worship, fellowship, and equipping, serve the church, and love your neighbor.
No one is going to write a biography about your everyday faithfulness. It may be that no one will even notice. But God sees, and God smiles upon your selfless obedience, so be a water carrier for Jesus.
Blessings in Christ,
