Our Outsized Impact

Pastor Evan Taylor • August 9, 2022

An article published last week by The Gospel Coalition utilized the term “nonparental adult” a couple of times in reference to any adult outside of a child’s family who connects with the child, and how impactful this is in the child’s development. While the article is focused on the context of the local church, it definitely speaks to the reason that Academy 4 is making such a difference in the lives of 4th graders throughout our area. Joseph writes:

  • A host of research studies have noted the benefits of nonparental adults in the lives of children and teens. Think of the adults who had a significant influence on your life growing up. Whether they were teachers, pastors, coaches, or extended family members, these people took the time to get to know you and point out your potential and gifts. I work as a counselor for teens, and I regularly tell parents that I’m not saying anything magical, I’m just a different voice encouraging and saying the same things they’ve said numerous times to their kids.

Many young people begin to “tune out” the voices of their parents and teachers, and really anyone they believe is only engaging them because they “have to”. Someone from the community who volunteers to be their mentor is able to make an outsized positive impact in their development, especially in the context of the economically disadvantaged schools that Academy 4 serves. I hope you’ll sign up to serve at Binion this year!

Of course, this opportunity to make an outsized impact in a young person’s life is also afforded to each one of us when we gather on Sundays, as the article makes clear:

  • Whether you remain part of a congregation for months or decades, you have the opportunity to play a vital role in the lives of the young people as they grow physically and, Lord-willing, spiritually… As an adult church member, you have been given the humbling stewardship of shaping how youth view the body of Christ.

As a discipling family of faith, let us all resolve to make regular efforts to acknowledge and engage the children whom the Lord welcomes to our services each Sunday.

Blessings in Christ,

Pastor Evan
