John 10:27-29
Bringing the sermon home:
These verses can be summarized with three P’s: Eternal life is personal, present, and permanent.
First, eternal life is a personal reality, as it is found in a personal relationship with Christ. Jesus explains in John 17:3 that this is eternal life: to intimately know God, Father and Son. Only those who personally place their trust in Christ and seek to walk with Him daily are given the undeserved gift of eternal life.
Second, eternal life is a present reality, as it is a gift that has already been granted to those who have been brought into union with Christ through faith. He explains in John 5:24: “the one who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.”
Finally, eternal life is a permanent reality. As Christ said, those to whom it is given “will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand.”
When we are tempted to doubt God’s love for us, or to otherwise doubt the certainty of our salvation, let us find encouragement and confidence in our knowledge of Christ. Eternal life is in Him, through Him, from Him, and with Him. He is our hope.
