Marks of a Healthy Church

Pastor Evan Taylor • October 19, 2021

In my first General Board meeting on Sunday, I was given a moment to give a “State of the Church” report, and I thought I’d share my thoughts with the full body.

As I’ve spoken with the members of this church, I’ve recognized a consistent self-awareness regarding the fact that, demographically, we are an older church, and that in if this work is to continue for years to come, it will be because the Lord has chosen to “add to [our] number” (Acts 2:47) new, younger converts.

With this in mind, many people start considering what changes might be appropriate to the Sunday morning worship service, or to the physical property, or to our children’s programs. These are healthy discussions, and I’m continuing to speak with the various committee chairs regarding suggestions I have for each area.

However, we can make all the changes any of us think need to be made and still not be in any position to expect God to add to our number if we have neglected more fundamental matters.

So, what are the marks of a healthy church without which we ought not expect God to add to our number, and are these characteristic of our church? Here are my “five P’s”:

  1. Proclamation – Are our gatherings centered around the faithful proclamation of God’s Word?

  2. Private Devotions – Are each of us growing spiritually through daily times of discipleship?

  3. Purity – Are we living transformed lives that cause people to ask us for the hope within us (1 Pet 3:15)?

  4. Prayer – Are we praying for God to cause our ministry labors to bear the fruit of conversions?

  5. Personal Evangelism – Are we regularly seeking to engage others in gospel conversations?

May the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all. (1 Thessalonians 3:12)

Blessings in Christ,

Pastor Evan
